In addition to my 30+ articles and columns in The Long Beach Business Journal, I've also published a number of articles on business, technology and sports for various publications, including The Los Angeles Times, Referee Magazine, Journal for the Association of Information Management (AIM High, regular contributor 1987-1993), and Longevity (a magazine for long board surfing enthusiasts).

Train Trips: When Time is Not of the Essence (as published in the Los Angeles Times, Sept.14, 2004)

Articles published in Referee Magazine

  • Growing up in England I've always loved soccer, so when Valeri and Alison began playing the game in the early 1990s I volunteered as a youth league referee. In 1996 I earned my USSF (United States Soccer Federation) Referee badge, and I began getting paid for referee high-level youth games. In 1998 I earned USSF State Referee status, which qualified me to officiate open-division men's league games, and in 2001 I achieved my current level, USSF State Referee Emeritus.

  • While serving on the Board of Directors for the Long Beach (Professional) Soccer Referees Association, I launched and wrote a monthly newsletter called the LBSRA Journal in which I interviewed America's top pro refs, such as Esse Baharmast (the only US ref in the 1998 World Cup, and now head of US Soccer's Referee division). My LBSRA Journal  caught the attention of the editor of Referee Magazine, the largest pro and semi-pro sports officiating publication, and I began selling them biographical stories on some of the world's top sports officials, including Brian Hall, the only American soccer referee sent to the 2002 World Cup, NFL Superbowl 2000 umpire Ron Botchan, and Moose Stubing, the liveliest character in college basketball officiating.
