New-Lee (age 0-18): England, America and Spain
I was born Leigh Nigel Godden on February 3, 1958 in St. Albans,
England. My parents divorced in
1967, and my mum brought me to America when I was nine.
I lost contact with my dad, I lost my British accent and
I became "Americanized." Mum remarried and my last name
was changed to Steinbach. She remarried again a few
years later. (I didn't change names that time.) In 1988,
at age 30, I located my father in England, flew over to
meet him, changed my name back to Godden, and re-established a close relationship with
dad for seven years until his death in 1995. My brother Terry and nephew
Steven both live in England, and my niece Claire
immigrated to California several years ago.
